I wholeheartedly respect the voters’ decision, am encouraging everyone who voted for me to ardently support Betsy’s campaign, and am wishing Betsy all the good fortune possible in her upcoming general election. Flipping this seat Democratic has never been more important, and I’m excited to volunteer with the Michigan Democratic Party to canvass for, and help elect, our Democratic candidates up and down the ballot this November.

We’ve had conversations with over 18,000 voters these past 6 months alone, and our community’s commitment to protecting reproductive choice, preventing gun violence, and overcoming political polarization couldn’t be clearer. I’m proud of the role that our campaign has played in energizing Democratic voters all around the community, while also earning our party more trust and respect from independent voters. That’s exactly the support we’ll need to build upon in order to expand our coalition and flip this State House seat Democratic.

We ran an integrity-filled race, kept our messaging entirely positive from the beginning, and spoke about both our primary and Betsy in only the warmest of terms. Communicating our vision, optimism, and energy was incredibly important to us from the start, and I couldn’t be more glad that it’s helped lay the foundation for an even more robust midterm turnout than we otherwise would have seen. So here’s to continued coalition building, critical electoral successes, and making important progress for both our state and community.

Overturning Roe v. Wade was a profoundly regressiv

Overturning Roe v. Wade was a profoundly regressive decision by our Supreme Court. I couldn’t feel more strongly about ensuring that everyone has the freedom to control their own body. Full stop. This ruling also brings up issues of privacy and family planning. Our lives are touched by it in ways that we might not always consider.

Couples struggling with fertility often resort to IVF as a means to conceive. Approximately 4 million births per year, in the U.S. alone, are facilitated via this process. IVF involves artificially fertilizing an egg in a lab, with the hope that it can be used to begin a pregnancy later on. It’s a relatively new process in the scheme of human history, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade suddenly raises questions about a couple’s responsibility to a fertilized egg — which places the process in a legal limbo of sorts. A lot of people involved in this process don’t talk about it openly, since fertility can bring up complicated feelings. It’s a personal issue, and it’s one that shouldn’t need to be complicated further.

I’ve talked about the idea of allyship and fighting for reproductive freedom even if one doesn’t feel the overturning of Roe as applying to them specifically. But it really does affect us all. Fertility is difficult enough as it is. This isn’t just about abortion — it’s also about personal freedom, control over our bodies, and the ability to pursue family planning the way that works best for each of us.

We devoured one too many pizzas from @thefillingstationtc, signed a few too many postcards (14,552 in total!), listened to Whitney Houston on repeat, and Tex put in some serious overtime making sure we all stayed on task.

Our collective challenges are so much bigger than

Our collective challenges are so much bigger than any one campaign, and it couldn’t be more important that we stay engaged with the struggle for reproductive freedom. Below are ways we can all help those who are most impacted by the recent court decision:

1. Nonprofit Membership. Getting involved with @ppofmi by becoming a member, volunteering, or donating to the organization.

2. Ballot Proposition Support. Supporting the @mireprofreedom ballot proposition. Telling your networks, helping them get out the word, and beginning to organize your communities in support of this November’s ballot proposition.

3. Local Marches. The majority of Americans support a woman’s right to choose. Millions are exercising their 1st amendment rights in support of everyone's right to reproductive freedom and privacy. Let’s continue to join them. Find events with @mippadvocates

I believe in protecting reproductive choice, preventing gun violence, investing in our public school system, conserving our environment, transitioning to renewable energy, investing in attainable housing, extending affordable child care, and beginning to overcome political polarization.

We’re working hard to build a broad coalition that’s invested in our community and wants to make material improvements. But we need to flip our State House seat in order to tangibly move the needle. I couldn’t believe more strongly that we’re the campaign best positioned to achieve that.

Affordable child care should be accessible to ever

Affordable child care should be accessible to every family in our community. Without it, we’ll continue losing our next generation to places that can better accommodate both family and working life. Far too often parents need to pick between contributing professionally and staying home to look after kids. This trade-off hurts our community.

We could start by introducing state legislation that expands funding to existing child care sites, adds direly needed new facilities, and begins to subsidize public child care. Counties could be obligated to provide preschool to all children from the age of one, and parents could receive a child care benefit covering some percentage of care-related expenses.

The state could also cap child care expenses at a percentage of each family’s income, not to exceed what the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) sets as the standard for affordability. This child care program could be funded to a state-set cost model, which would meet the actual cost of providing high-quality care and education to our children. This would ensure that early care educators are paid a living wage. Taken together, these measures would vastly expand the scope and affordability of child care in Michigan.

I know how difficult it can feel to celebrate right now, given recent events and how tough times are at the moment. But today I’m trying to focus on the resilience of my friends, family, and community. I really hope that you’re able to spend time with close family / friends too, and have a meaningful holiday with your loved ones.
